Bills, claims and changes

How do I pay my bill?

You pay your insurance company directly. Use the “Pay your bill” link for your company on our Pay a Bill & Report a Claim page, or call the billing number listed there. Your bill also shows your policy number and payment options.

How do I report a claim?

You have two options. You can report it directly to your insurance company, online or by phone, using the links on our Pay a Bill & Report a Claim page; many claim lines are open 24/7. Or, if you’d like help deciding whether and how to file, talk with our office first. Either way, let us know through our Claim Notification form or by calling 508-925-5267, so we can help you through the process.

What should I do after a car accident?

Make sure everyone is safe and call 911 if anyone is hurt. Exchange names, contact, license, plate and insurance information with the other drivers, and take photos if it’s safe. In Massachusetts, if anyone is injured or the damage is more than $1,000, each driver must file a Motor Vehicle Crash Operator Report within five days. Then report the claim to your insurance company and let us know.

Who do I call after hours?

For a claim or emergency, call your insurance company’s claims line, which is listed on our Pay a Bill & Report a Claim page; many are open 24/7. For anything else, call or email us and we’ll get back to you the next business day.

Can I change my coverage by email or through the website?

You can send us a request any time, but changes aren’t in effect until we confirm them with you and the insurance company accepts them. If you need coverage in place by a certain date, please call us.

How do I get a certificate of insurance?

Use our Certificate Request form or call us. Tell us who needs the certificate and any special requirements, such as additional insured status, and we’ll send it, usually within one business day.

Auto insurance in Massachusetts

What auto insurance is required in Massachusetts?

Every registered vehicle must carry four compulsory coverages. Since July 1, 2025, the minimums are: bodily injury to others, $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident; personal injury protection (PIP), $8,000; bodily injury caused by an uninsured auto, $25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident; and damage to someone else’s property, $30,000. These are only minimums. Most people need higher limits to protect their savings and home, and we’re glad to help you choose.

I’m buying a new car. What do I do?

Call us before you pick it up. In Massachusetts you need insurance to register a car, and we’ll add the vehicle to your policy and complete the insurance section of the registration application (RMV-1) for you.

What is the Safe Driver Insurance Plan (SDIP)?

It’s the Massachusetts system that adjusts your auto premium based on your driving record. At-fault accidents and traffic violations add surcharge points; years of clean driving earn credits. If you disagree with an at-fault finding, you can appeal it; we can explain how.

Why did my premium go up at renewal?

Rates change for many reasons: claims or tickets, a new driver or vehicle, changes in repair and building costs, or rate changes by the insurance company. As an independent agency, we can compare other companies at renewal. Call us before your renewal date.

RMV transactions

Many Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) transactions can be done online through myRMV, the RMV’s online service center, without visiting a Service Center. Go to myRMV or the Massachusetts RMV website. Links to common services are also on our Massachusetts Driver Resources page.

How do I renew my vehicle registration?

Most registrations can be renewed online through myRMV. Your car must be insured, and you’ll need to clear any unpaid excise taxes, parking tickets or tolls first. The RMV mails your new registration and sticker.

How do I renew my driver’s license?

Many drivers can renew online through myRMV. You may need to renew in person at an RMV Service Center if, for example, you need a new photo, are upgrading to a REAL ID, or the RMV requires a vision test. myRMV tells you which applies when you start.

I sold my car or moved out of state. How do I cancel my plates?

Cancel the registration and plates with the RMV first (you can do this online through myRMV), then let us know. The RMV gives you a plate return receipt; your insurance company needs it before it can cancel the auto policy and refund any unused premium. Please don’t cancel your insurance until the plates are cancelled: driving or keeping an active registration without insurance can lead to penalties.

I moved. Who do I need to tell?

Change your address with the RMV within 30 days (you can do it online through myRMV), and let us know too. Your address affects your insurance rates, so we’ll update your policies with your insurance company.

What else can I do online with the RMV?

Through myRMV you can also replace a lost license or registration, order a driving record, pay certain fees and citations, and make a reservation for services that need an in-person visit.

Do I need anything from you to register a car?

Yes. To register a vehicle in Massachusetts, your insurance agent must complete and stamp the insurance section of the RMV registration application (RMV-1). Call us before you go to the RMV or pick up a car from a dealer.

Home and other coverage

Does my homeowners policy cover flooding?

No. Standard homeowners, condo and renters policies don’t cover flood damage. Flood insurance is a separate policy, available through the National Flood Insurance Program and private insurers. Most flood policies have a 30-day waiting period, so don’t wait for a storm.

What’s the difference between replacement cost and actual cash value?

Replacement cost pays to repair or replace damaged property with new items of similar kind and quality. Actual cash value takes depreciation into account, so it pays less for older items. Your policy declarations show which applies.

What is umbrella insurance, and do I need it?

An umbrella policy adds extra liability protection, often $1 million or more, above your home and auto policies. It’s worth considering if you have savings, a home, teenage drivers, a pool or rental property. It usually costs less than people expect.

Do you offer life insurance?

Yes, through our specialist life insurance partners. Call us at 508-925-5267 and we’ll connect you.

This information is general and doesn’t change or replace the terms of any policy. For questions about your own coverage, please call us at 508-925-5267.
